Qada Zakat
Definition of Qada Zakat
Qada zakat means fulfilling zakat that was obligatory in the past but was not performed due to forgetfulness, intentional neglect, or being left undone for any reason until its haul (one year) passed. It must therefore be performed immediately.
In the context of worship, qada refers to any missed obligatory act (such as fasting, prayer, and zakat) that must be made up, whether it was forgotten, deliberately neglected, or performed by someone who apostatized and then returned to Islam.
Individuals or companies that meet the conditions for zakat are eligible to pay zakat for previous years. If they have not yet settled all obligatory zakat from past years, that zakat must be fulfilled as qada.
In terms of jurisprudential terminology (fiqh), qada is an act of worship performed after its designated time has passed, to make up for what was missed, either by performing it again or completing acts of worship that were invalid, neglected, or deliberately left out at their proper times
Ruling on Qada Zakat
The ruling on qada zakat is obligatory, and it is sinful if deliberately neglected.
This has been explained by Imam Hambali and Imam Shafi’i: “When the zakat payment can be made immediately, anyone who delays it is considered negligent (in fulfilling the obligation of zakat) and must be accountable for this negligence.”
Refer to Al-Mughni, Volume 2, page 686 and Al-Majmu’, Volume 5, page 302.
Islamic Religious Administration Enactment (State of Selangor) 2003
Fatwa under Section 47 relates to the ruling on private distribution and qada zakat. Regarding the ruling on qada zakat, it is obligatory for zakat that meets the required conditions but was not performed at its designated time.
Wisdom of Qada Zakat
- Provides peace and tranquility of the soul.
- Purifies wealth that has not yet been paid as zakat.
- Fulfills the rights of Allah SWT over one’s wealth.
- Prevents heirs from consuming unlawful (haram) wealth.
- Does not burden heirs with wealth that has not been subjected to zakat.
Ways to Perform Qada Zakat
- Qada zakat is calculated based on the nisab at the time of the previous haul.
- Payment of qada zakat can be made in installments or according to one’s ability.
- Zakat payment can also be made either by visiting zakat branches throughout the state of Selangor or through other payment channels such as internet banking, bank agents, and others.
Calculation of Qada Zakat
Qada zakat is paid according to the year and value of the wealth. The rate of Qada Zakat is 2.5%. If the exact amount of wealth at that time is unknown, an approximate value should be used.
